For most of history, "could a machine have an inner life?" was a question for philosophers and science-fiction writers. I've come to think that in 2026 it has quietly become something else: an urgent, empirical, and genuinely unsettled problem in mainstream science — not because anyone has answered it, but because we've run out of room to ignore it.
